| "In my neighbourhood, a great
blue heron has made its home along a
river and adjacent pond. I often visit the place to view this
magnificent bird. One afternoon, as the heron was relaxing on
the
river bank, I approached it slowly, one step at a time. To my
great
surprise, I could sit on a rock no more than a few feet away from the
bird, without disturbing it. The next two hours were
exhilarating. I
observed the beauty and rich complexity of its feathers. I
felt
emotion and personality through its eyes. "The Sovereign" is
a
portrait meant to capture all of these elements. The title is
inspired
by the fact that the great blue heron is not only the tallest of the
herons, but also often thought of as the most graceful." (artwork and text published in "The Art of Conservation" book (2009)) |
